The inaugural results from the UK’s first in depth monthly monitor of consumer confidence The Alpha Monitor: consumer is now available. We find most people are pessimistic, expecting their standard of living to deteriorate over the next year from a higher cost of living. More than a third of UK households claimed to have some difficulty making their regular debt payments, with nearly one in ten struggling or in serious financial difficulty. Each month we will track changing consumer sentiment, the causes and the effects on spending.

Last week PepsiCo became the first company in the UK to place carbon footprint labelling on its product packaging by placing such information on the packets of Walkers crisps. And so the first shots have been fired on a new consumer battleground. In this issue of The Alpha Bulletin, we discuss the possible implications of this approach for UK consumer stocks.

The UK has experienced the wettest July since 1988 and the highest rainfall between May and July since records began. For our first bulletin, we surveyed over 46,000 UK adults (from the YouGov panel) on the impact that the poor July weather had on spending in some key consumer sectors. Denise was previously the Director of Research Development at Institutional Investor, responsible for building relationships with Europe’s sell side and initiating an investor relations business for the region’s blue chips. Prior to joining Institutional Investor, she was the Global Head of Surveys at Tempest Consultants, working in Hong Kong and London. Denise has a doctorate in Financial Econometrics from Brunel University, London.
